The Elephant's Foot Glacier is located in the northeast of Greenland and looks like dough poured into a frying pan. The multi-ton ice broke through the mountain and spilled into the sea in an almost symmetrical shape.

Features of a glacial landscape Glacier morphology, or the form a glacier takes, is influenced by temperature, precipitation, topography, and other factors. [1] The goal of glacial morphology is to gain a better understanding of glaciated landscapes and the way they are shaped. [2]

On February 11, 2013, the Landsat 8 satellite rocketed into space to extend a four-decade legacy of Earth observations. A few months after launch, we published a composite of images that spanned 9,000 kilometers of land from Russia to South Africa. In celebration of the satellite's second anniversary, the mosaic concept returns with a chilly twist, this time featuring a slice of the Arctic.

The shape of Greenland's Elephant Foot Glacier, for example, is so distinct that it stands out dramatically from its surroundings when viewed from space. The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired this image of the glacier on June 21, 2014. "Elephant Foot is an excellent example of a piedmont glacier," said NASA scientist Tom.

The Elephant Foot Glacier is located on the Kronprins Christian Land peninsula. It is not connected to Greenland's main ice sheet. Rather, it's part of a network of glaciers and ice caps that hangs around the periphery of the island.

Elephant Foot Glacier As Seen From Orbit SpaceRef

The Elephant Foot Glacier is located on the Kronprins Christian Land peninsula. The sheer pressure of the zillion-ton ice has broken through the mountain and spilled into the sea in close to the symmetric, fan-shaped lobe. This kind of glacier is known as "Piedmont glaciers", and the Elephant Foot Glacier is a textbook example of it.

Elephant Foot Glacier, Greenland. Credit: Ole Zeising (distributed via imaggeo) Ice is a viscous fluid: it flows but slowly, reaching up to 100 m/yr for the fastest flowing ice. That's 0.00001 km/hr, so you'd never see it with the naked eye. But what influences the morphology of the glaciers is the shape of the topography that lies underneath them.

The „Elephant Foot Glacier" is located on the Kronprins Christian Land peninsula in northeast Greenland. The broad piedmont glacier with a symmetrically-shaped, 5.4 kilometres wide terminal lobe flows into the Romer Lake. It is not connected to Greenland's main ice sheet. Outer glaciers like these account for 20 percent of Greenland's.
