Many photographers have boxes of old film negatives they would like to access in Lightroom. While most film scanning software can automatically invert the photos, this won't work when using a camera to photograph them. So, how do you invert your negative into a positive photo?

I've written a few posts about camera-scanning film negatives and converting the negatives in Lightroom.I've been beyond thrilled with the results produced by Negative Lab Pro, but one lingering issue I've seen is a lack of uniform color across the frame and particularly in the corners caused by uneven lighting of the negative when.

Negative Lab Pro, on the other hand, is a plugin for Lightroom specifically designed to convert digital images into high-quality digital negatives that replicate the look of traditional film. It uses a complex algorithm to analyze the colors and tones in an image and apply a color profile that mimics the look of various film types.

Under the profile tab in Lightroom check that the Negative Lab V.21 profile hass been assigned. Next step is white balance correction. Use the white balance tool to sample parts of the film border by clicking on the unexposed parts of the film.

In the image above you can see my typical scan settings for color negative film. Make sure the film type is set to "Color Negative Film" before you do the preview scan. Note: also make sure that you uncheck the "Unsharp Mask" Box - EPSON Scan likes to turn this box on all the time and you don't want this enabled.
